Do I need a DBS check and how do I complete one?

A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check helps ensure football remains a safe environment for everyone involved.

Whether you need a DBS check depends on the type of football you referee.

Who needs a DBS check?

You must hold a valid DBS check if you referee youth football (Under 18s).

If you only referee open-age football (18+), you are not required to have a DBS check.

If you plan to referee both youth and adult football, you will need a valid DBS check before officiating youth matches.

Starting a new DBS check

If you need to complete your first DBS check, Sussex FA will provide you with the information required to begin the application process.

Once your application has been submitted, you'll receive instructions on completing your identity verification.

Your DBS certificate will then be processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Renewing your DBS

DBS checks must be renewed every three years to remain valid for football.

Sussex FA will contact you before your DBS expires with information on how to complete your renewal.

We recommend completing your renewal as soon as possible to avoid any interruption to your ability to referee youth football.

How long is a DBS valid for?

A DBS check completed through football is valid for three years.

You should also ensure your safeguarding qualification remains in date, as this is a separate requirement.

How do I know if my DBS is due to expire?

You'll receive reminder communications before your DBS expires.

However, it's your responsibility to ensure your DBS remains valid if you wish to continue refereeing youth football.
