To referee affiliated football in England, all referees must hold a current referee registration.
Whether you've recently qualified or you're renewing for another season, this guide explains everything you need to know.
Registering as a newly qualified referee
Once you've successfully completed The FA Referee Course and met all qualification requirements, Sussex FA will
automatically register you for the remainder of your first season.
Re-registering as an existing referee
Referees must renew their registration every season to continue officiating affiliated football.
Registration for the new season usually opens during the summer, before the start of the football season.
Sussex FA will contact all eligible referees by email with instructions on how to complete their re-registration.
How much does registration cost?
Registration fees are set annually by The FA and are £30 for the season
The current fee will be displayed during the online registration process.
Any additional requirements, such as safeguarding training or a DBS check (where applicable), should also be completed before registration.
When should I register?
We recommend registering as soon as registration opens.
Registering early allows you to:
- Accept appointments without delay.
- Access development opportunities.
- Attend CPD events.
- Ensure leagues can appoint you for the start of the season.
Failure to register before the season begins may delay your ability to referee affiliated football.
How do I register?
Registration is completed online through the England Football platform.
When registration opens, Sussex FA will provide referees with:
- A direct registration link.
- Guidance on completing the process.
- Details of any outstanding safeguarding or DBS requirements.
If you've not received your registration email, please check your junk or spam folder before contacting us.
