What happens if I can't get a game?

It can sometimes take a little time to secure your first appointments, particularly at the start of the season when demand from referees is high.

If you're struggling to find games, don't worry - there are several options available to help you increase your opportunities.

My league is oversubscribed

Some leagues receive more referee availability than they have fixtures available.

If this happens, you may not receive an appointment every weekend, even if you've made yourself available. This is a normal part of refereeing, particularly during the early weeks of the season or on popular competitions.

Try other leagues

You don't have to referee on just one league.

Many referees officiate across several competitions to increase their opportunities, gain experience and build relationships with different appointments officers.

You may also wish to:

• Contact neighbouring leagues.

• Apply for open fixtures on Centre Circle.

• Speak directly with Referee Appointments Officers.

• Join your local Referees' Association to hear about available games.

Being flexible with travel and kick-off times can also increase your chances of receiving appointments.

Do you still play football?

If you currently play football yourself, it's worth considering how much time you can realistically dedicate to refereeing.

Many leagues and appointments officers naturally prioritise referees who are regularly available throughout the season. If you're only available occasionally due to your own playing commitments, you may receive fewer appointments than those who referee every weekend.

Many referees successfully combine playing and officiating, but if your ambition is to develop as a referee, setting aside dedicated weekends for refereeing will generally provide more appointment opportunities and support your progression.

I'm completing my five qualifying games

Can I referee outside Sussex?

Yes. If you're willing to travel, you may referee in neighbouring County FAs, subject to the league's appointment process.
