At Sussex FA, we're committed to supporting referees throughout every stage of their journey.

Whether you're newly qualified or an experienced official, there are a range of people and development opportunities available to help you improve and achieve your goals.

Referee Development Team

The Sussex FA Referee Development Team is here to support you throughout your refereeing journey.

We can help with:

  • Progression and promotion advice.
  • Finding appointments.
  • Registration queries.
  • Development opportunities.
  • General refereeing support.

If you're ever unsure where to turn, please get in touch - we're here to help.

Mentoring

Mentoring provides referees with additional support, particularly during the early stages of their refereeing journey.

A mentor can:

  • Offer advice before and after matches.
  • Help build confidence.
  • Share practical match management tips.
  • Support your personal development.

If you feel you would benefit from a mentor, you can request one through the Sussex FA mentoring programme.

CORE Programme

The CORE Programme is Sussex FA's flagship referee development programme.

Designed for referees demonstrating potential and commitment, the programme offers enhanced development opportunities, including:

  • Individual coaching and support.
  • Development observations.
  • Workshops and practical learning.
  • Networking with other ambitious referees.

Places on the programme are limited and are offered through an assessment and selection process.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Sussex FA delivers a range of CPD opportunities throughout the season for referees of all experience levels.

These may include:

  • Face-to-face CPD events.
  • Online workshops.
  • Laws of the Game updates.
  • Guest speakers.
  • Practical development sessions.
  • Targeted learning opportunities.

We encourage every referee to attend CPD regularly, regardless of whether they are seeking promotion.

Additional development opportunities

Throughout the season, Sussex FA may also offer opportunities such as:

  • Academy and development programmes.
  • Refereeing at tournaments and festivals.
  • County Cup appointments.
  • Specialist workshops.
  • Leadership and volunteering opportunities.

These opportunities are advertised throughout the season, so keep an eye on your emails and the Sussex FA website.

Your development is your journey

Every referee develops at their own pace.

Whether your ambition is to progress through the referee pathway or simply enjoy officiating grassroots football each weekend, Sussex FA is committed to helping you achieve your personal goals.
